Shrine, 1982-
In 2020, I created the nation’s first Shrine
Children’s Clinic, which is now in Blank
Children’s Hospital here in Des Moines to prove
to the Shrine this is their medical model for the
next 100 years– 2020- Only two years old and it
has already outgrown its facility and they are
looking for a third surgeon and will be provided
its new office in a standalone building. The local
Shrine unit is thrilled as its members no longer
have to pick up an Iowa child, take them to
Minneapolis, Chicago or St Louis to the nearest
Shrine Hospital. Now the other four Iowa Shrine
Temples want their own clinics. The national
Shrine Hospital Board came to Des Moines this
year to see why their Clinic was so successful.
My hope is that ten years from now there will be
many Shrine Children’s Clinics in America. Just
think of the number of children that will benefit
from their decision. The Shrine has increased
its activity to modify their previous model to
benefit from the lessons they have learned with
this clinic as a model.

Masonic Cemetery. My parents are buried there. It
was created in the 1920’s and sits adjacent to the City
of Des Moines Glendale Cemetery. Because of
declining membership and a lack of resources their
cemetery was deteriorating. I got upset and finally
convinced the two Lodges that currently own the
cemetery to allow me to convince the City to take over
this cemetery and incorporate it into their own. They
agreed that they had a problem, just did not know what
to do about it. I started with the Mayor and convinced
him that it was going to become an embarrassment to
the community. Once he was convinced he and I met
with the Parks Department that maintains city
cemeteries. He told them that this transfer was going
to happen. They worked diligently to impress the Mayor. The
transition happened July 1ST, 2023. The
Lodges are thrilled as they get out from under an
albatross. My mother would be happy as dandelions
will no longer be allowed to grow on her grave.

Director, 1974-1978
I first explained the benefit for the Community, and then
made the motion as a member of the UnityPoint Health
Broad for UnityPoint -- Des Moines to acquire Eyerly
Ball as a part of the UnityPoint Mental Health
continuum of the Hospital mental care system. Most
people with mental health issues only need a qualified
person to talk to. The psychologists of Eyerly Ball now
provide an alternative input facility to pre-screen
prisioners the police and sheriff are delivering to the
Polk County jail. The problem they previously caused
was because they were using the emergency
department at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. If they needed
care, once in the hospital door, they were filling the
hospital mental health beds. The hospital already had
a four month waiting list for patients that seriously
needed hospitalization whose beds the prisioners were
taking. Prisoners needing care could be treated while
in the County Jail by the psychologists of Eyerly Ball.
This has proven to be very successful. 2018-

Legal Counsel, reorganizer and central coordinator
focusing on preservation of the 6 of 130 bonobos
living in captivity in the world today. 2012-2017.
(These Des Moines bonobos are unique in that they have lived in a human environment
their entire life. They differ from human genetics by less than 1½ %. They can understand
us when we speak. Now they have a symbolic language system that allows them to
speak back to us. Des Moines Iowa is the only place on earth where you can conduct
an intelligent conversation in the English language with another species of life.
Kanzi is now age 40. He thinks on an 11th grade level. He speaks English at about an
age 4 level because the bonobos are limited to the 500 symbols that are distributed over
4 boards they can carry, or by touching the symbols in their computer. The computer
states the words they have selected in spoken English. They can give you entire
sentences or paragraphs that are linguistically correct.
Kanzi is the most intelligent non-human living on Earth today. His son Teco at age 10
has outdistanced his father without being taught, showing there is also an epigenetic
transfer of information between generations. As this is the only place on Earth where
humans can conduct an intelligent conversation in the English language with another
species of life, these seven bonobos live life on a higher level than any other non-human.
Kanzi painted a canvas painting for me and signed it with his footprint thanking me for my
work trying to save his home in Des Moines for his family. (That painting says a lot to me
confirming why I practiced law. My purpose is to leave the world a better place because i
have been here.)
